Re: Change email provider? That isn’t a flippant remark, it’s a serious suggestion.

@licquorice

Indeed, and I’ve seen that line trotted out more than once on this forum. Millions of happy customers and a tiny weeny minority who literally just come onto this forum and complain.

With good reason, despite your cynicism

Indeed I've seen you trot out the line about your email account more than once on this forum but it doesn't mean it is any more or less secure than BT or any other email service.

As has been pointed out most hacks are as a result of user error ie using poor passwords or being socialy engineered into giving out details that can often be part if not all of their password. ie childs name,DOB etc. Using the same password on multiple accounts etc etc.

A search of this forum with Email Hacked does indeed bring up a lot of hits but not all are about hacked email accounts. If you checked you will have seen a lot of them are suspected hacks because their email address has been spoofed or their xbox account does not work and they suspect being hacked etc. So not all of the hits are about email accounts being hacked.

I assume you also checked other email suppliers forums for a comparison. What did you find there?

And just for the record I and some of my family have been using BT email for over 30 years and none of the accounts have been hacked nor have any of the non BT email accounts I use.

But that's the actual reason. This type of forum, and many other similar ones, are by nature for those that have an issue, so virtually all you see here are complaints, and rightly so. That way they can be addressed as needed.

Re: Change email provider? That isn’t a flippant remark, it’s a serious suggestion.

Ironically, whilst I have looking at this thread, I have had an email from someone calling themselves Nigel Gutteridge asaking me to get the an Apple Gift card. I don't know anyone called Nigel Gutteridge. I have tried using the Password Manager from Norton's, but it's hopeless if I update a password Nortons doesn't update itself. So I end up keeping a book with passwords in, not very secure but !

@Andy_N  Indeed, I don’t dispute what you’re stating. Just a shame that many of those seeking ‘advice’ are it seems just plain bone idle and won’t use the search facility on this very forum. I mean, look at the huge number of threads created about problems with BT email when the vast majority could literally get the answers they need just by using their own common sense and actually looking for the answers. But of course that’s far too easy, no one these days wants to help themselves.

Kimberlin,

I don't think it's so much being bone idle, it's more like people don't understand the latest  technology. Everything, has got more complicated as we have gone along. Not only has it got more complicated, but it's more expensive. Things that were free or readily available are now pay monthly. Afterall how many people understand all the settings on their PC or tablet, and nothing comes with a manual anymore.

Cheers,

Re: Change email provider? That isn’t a flippant remark, it’s a serious suggestion.

@Kimberlin   I don’t think people are bone idle at all.  Have you seen how many posts there are on something like this, not to mention the likes of you and I endlessly debating things, rapidly makes the threads very lengthy?  Even I struggle to find stuff and I often don’t have time to wade through all the (no offense meant, people) nonsense that gets posted.  It is often quicker to ask the question, even if someone then points you to a specific previous post as the answer.

@enfield250   Nothing wrong with having passwords in a notebook.  Let’s face it, no one is going to hack into good old paper and pencil.  The problem is storing it somewhere safe rather than leaving your passwords on a post-it note stuck to the monitor.

Many years ago, before password managers, I used a system of storing passwords on coloured index cards, with a slip of paper in my wallet acting as the index.  For example, this forum would on the list as R3.  The password would actually be written on line 3 of the red card.  Of course, modern brute forcing techniques would make the list on the cards vulnerable today if it fell into the wrong hands but, as it was locked in my filing cabinet when not in use, someone would have to burgle the house to get it.  And the list in my wallet was useless without the cards.

There are other techniques you can use as well.  For a while I recorded passwords with the first three and one but last characters being dummies.  Anyone attempting to spray those passwords would hit a brick wall, even if they did nick the index cards.

Re: Change email provider? That isn’t a flippant remark, it’s a serious suggestion.

@enfield250

Well I’m almost 60 and I’ve no tech background whatsoever, indeed some would say I’m as thick as pig muck, but even I’ve got the plain common sense to sit down and do some actual research on technology. I learned all by myself how to build my own desktop, I’ve installed a full home security system, none of it is actually difficult, it’s all about applying oneself.

This forum is in effect nothing more than a place most of the time it seems even acknowledged by other members, as a place for people to come and whinge and moan at BT instead of taking their complaints directly to BT themselves. I mean, what’s all this nonsense advising people to email the CEO of BT? Why can’t BT just do what they’re supposed to do and look after their customers? Let’s get a Moderator to answer that one!

Funny how folks are able to find this website and register a profile but then seemingly don’t have the capability of finding the answer to a question already discussed and answered numerous times in threads here? So yes, I maintain that there is an element of bone idleness out there.

@enfield250

Without knowing the full context of the email you received, have you considered that it was a phishing/scam email hoping that you will respond to it in some way such as pointing out to the "Nigel" that he has sent his email to the wrong email address or that you respond in some other way that is helpful to the scammer.

Hopefully all you did was delete it.
