Re: Email pin - text message barrage

This is beyond a joke at this point.

BT telling us they can’t work out how to stop sending hundreds and hundreds of codes everyday?

I don’t trust what I’m being told at this point and can’t wait to get rid of BT. I’m also beginning the process of moving everything off of this email.

The pins NEED TO BE 8 digit. This is the ONLY mitigation.

No, 4 digits with a 3 attempt limit and lockout for 24 hours is perfectly adequate.

At a push, you could go for  6 digits, 8 digits is plain ludicrous overkill.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

Maybe one of you more knowledgeable geeks in this thread can answer this question for me:

Apart from the hackers accessing my BT email and reading through past mails for information they could use against me, what else is there in the "MyBT" section of the site that could be useful to them? I've already deleted all of my email history and in the MyBT section I've removed my phone number. What else is there that I can do to mitigate any damage were the hackers to eventually get access to my account?

Its beyond absurd at this point, tbh. I'm running out of patience and may just foot the £400+ "early termination charge" bill (putting me in debt) in order to switch providers so I can at least minimise some of the stress this is causing me. I really don't have time to be checking my security daily, changing passwords etc, and chasing up on BT to see if they're ever going to sort this out. I already wasted 2+ hours today basically being gaslit by them. Its unacceptable.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

All hackers want is your email address and contact list. They then email all your contacts asking them to assist with buying an Amazon voucher etc in the hope that one or more are duped and reply to the by now diverted email address.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

What about things like Direct Debit details? Maybe its a coincidence but last week I was phoned by a scammer pretending to be my bank. He had a surprising amount of details about my bank account. I'm starting to wonder if these BT hackers have already got into the MyBT section of my account and got a hold of some of my bank details from there

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

Oh, by the way, another concern is that when I go into MyBT and try to check the "Personal Details" and "Account Details" section I'm consistently met with these two notices:
"We can't access your account" & "There was an error showing your profile details".
One of these areas includes the place I'm meant to go to make sure 2 Factor Authentication is enabled.
At this point it feels like a really bad joke. I have cleared my browser's cache. It makes no difference.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

I suggest you call BT customer services.

Bank account number and sort code are not a secret, they are written on every cheque. They are of no use to anyone in isolation.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

@hackercomplaint  Reading through your posts and bearing in mind that ordinary forum members here can do nothing for you, why not just act on the threats you’ve already made in other posts, pay the early termination charge and leave for another ISP? Surely that would save you an indeterminate amount of stress coming onto the forum complaining everyday about a situation that clearly isn’t going to be resolved any time soon.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

@Kimberlin The people on this thread are the only ones who've actually helped me understand what's probably happening here and the best things I can do to mitigate the potential damage a hacker could cause. eg: deleting my contacts so if my email is eventually compromised they can't use my contacts to do damage elsewhere. I was completely unaware of that until someone here mentioned it.

I've spent hours on the phone to BT and all they did was gaslight me. They said its not a hacker, its just a glitch. They're lying. Then I come back here and get actual, useful, non-gaslighting info from the knowledgeable people in this thread. Without this thread I'd be pretty lost as to what to do. I also felt like sharing my experience here may be useful to others. Sorry, not sorry.

"Every day"? Nope. A few days out of the multiple weeks during which this has been a problem for me.

And why not immediately "act on the threats" to leave? I've already explained: I'd rather not because the charge is over £400 which I cannot afford right now. I was hoping BT would fix the issue and maybe even that pressure through this thread (and others) might help to get them to act.. but it seems like they're not going to. Other people on this thread helped clarify that. Phoning BT clarified nothing. I'm now trying to find a way to make it financially feasible for me to pay the ETC. Thanks. And thanks again to the members of this thread who've been very helpful. Both here and via DM.

Re: Email pin - text message barrage

My understanding is that if they can access your email account they can use it for sending spam messages
