Managing Sub-Acccounts

Go to solution

I have a problem with one of my sub-accounts. I can access the emails, but when I try to log in to MyBT with it, I am informed that the email or password is incorrect and I cannot get in. The details I enter are definitely correct. All my other sub-accounts have no problem accessing either the emails or MyBT. Is anyone able to advise me please?

Re: Managing Sub-Acccounts

After much head scratching I discovered that the sub-account I was trying to access MyBT with wasn't like his brothers and sisters. All the other sub-accounts were ones I had given to their users, but this one for some strange reason was still under my control and therefore didn't have its own BT account. Anyway, problem solved!

Useful info. Thanks for posting and telling us what you did. I seem to get tripped up with those sub accounts too.

For Information:

If you are the BT Broadband account holder prior to 26th October 2022 you have the ability to create 11 email addresses/accounts.

These email accounts could all be used by you in which case they would all be linked to your BTID and MyBT and this would also be the account that the 2FA system would be responding to.

This meant that they are managed by you. You can change the password and delete the email account and obviously you would be able to access the all the email accounts because you would know the password.

In many cases the BT Broadband account holder gave these email addresses to friends and family so that they would have their own email address and in many cases they did not follow the "correct" procedure when doing this. They simply said "here is an email address/account that you can use".

By just doing that and not using the "correct" procedure it meant that those email accounts were still "owned and managed" by the BT Broadband account holder and they would show in the Broadband account holder's  MyBT "Active email addresses" section and not in the "Friends and Family" section.

The "correct" procedure which is given in the following link means that the email account that is being given to the friend or family must be "gifted". This requires it to be accepted by the recipient who must set up a BTID and this in turn gives them access to their own MyBT where they can manage the email account and 2FA for the email account.

The Broadband account holder then no longer manages the email account or know the password unless it was given it by the email account holder and they can not change the password unless they know the password and security details. All they can now do is remove/delete the email account from their broadband account.

The recipient now has the management of that email account where they can set and change the password and delete the account. They also be responsible for the 2FA of the account using the details that they supplied when setting up their BTID/MyBT.

@gg30340  Not that I’m leaving, but if I decided to move from BT, and not pay for Premium Email,  I know I can keep my primary email address and access email through a browser. But what happens to sub accounts and the ones that have been gifted?

I’ve been with BT many, many years….

If you pay for a BT Premium email account it includes all your email addresses that have already been created from the BT Broadband account.

You can call BT Premium Team on 0808 100 6778 to confirm.

Re: Managing Sub-Acccounts

I may have missread your first post. I read it think you were going to get a Premium email account.

If you do not take out a BT Premium email account ALL the email addresses/accounts that are associated to your BT Broadband account will be "downgraded to BTMail Basic.

This includes the "gifted" accounts but they will be given the option to take out a BT Premium email account for them selves if they want to retain the email accounts the same as they are just now. ie As "standard"  which will allow them to use the email account with email clients and email apps.

If they did take out a Premium email account as far as I can recall they will also be able to create new email addresses because they are now a  "stand alone" Premium account holder.

If you do take out a BT Premium email account ALL the email accounts that are associated with your BT Brodadband account including the "gifted" accounts will become PT Premium email accounts ie "standard" as they are now but they will not be able to make any new email addresses.

The reason I said to call the BT Premium email team was so that you could confirm what I have posted was correct in case you had any doubts.
