I have had the same issue, btmail not working using Gmail app. Both mine and my wife's account stopped synchronising. We have an still are BT customers for over 20 years and used btmail for same time.
If BT security cutting access for those using Gmail app do I have to use another....oh god I hope they don't suggest outlook app!!!!

BT don't know or care what particular app you use to collect BT internet email. They cannot possibly restrict access to any particular app(s).
It is probably just a temporary glitch.
Edit: I've just created a test account with no problems in the Gmail app.
You are right a temporary glitch which has taken most of my morning to fix....i.e. research, change password, contact BT, change password, remove Gmail account, re- add Gmail account, fail to recognise, more research, add Gmail again.... success 😃😃. Now just have the joy of synchronising all folders. Maybe lesson is don't do anything for a full day!!
