I think the truth is that no one on this Community thread positively knows the underlying cause.
BT is NOT the only email service provider affected by this problem. In the US the same issue is being seen by some users of Earthlink and Network Solutions providers. A commonality is the use of several versions MS Outlook email client - however it could be some aspect of the MS HTML rendering within Outlook which has only caused the problem following a change to some other 3rd party component either common to the afffected client systems, such as virus/security software, or to the mail server infrastructure of the affected service providers.
The flaw in your post is that it is not only effecting Outlook. User have reported it happening on Thunderbird and other email clients/apps.
The commonality is that it is apparently POP3 users and not IMAP users that are being effected
When i was looking into this yesterday, saw some stuff about VADE which I understand is an anti-spam company that has technology that ISP's use to filter spam, and comments that if mis-configured it can cause the sort of problems we are seeing. There was also speculation that the problem might be limited to individual (mis-configured) email servers which could explain why not everybody is seeing this problem.
However, I am no expert on any of this but it might be food for thought 🙂

your bt emails are still available online from bts webmail program and the are normal so you wont lose anything, its a bt issue pop 3 and they are looking in to it as i have had messages from a moderator requesting more info for them.
Not unless the POP3 client is configured to leave a copy of the mail on the server, otherwise the client will simply download the corrupted mail and delete the copy on the server.

@Ninasmwrote:Thank you distinguished sage! I wrote that as it appeared some people in the Community were considering it could be a problem with Outlook
That is most likely because the never read the thread!
Very few people read threads before posting, they just tag another post on the end which just makes the thread even longer and even less likely to be read. ☹️
In the last couple of days my incoming BT mail into MS Outlook has displayed as garbage:
Sample:
X-SNCR-TRUST: nongov-list-lo
X-RazorGate-Vade:
The above is part of what was sent from this forum to verify my signup.
Fortunately the web version is ok.
Other mail from another service provider is not affected. Any ideas?
Running W10 (up to date) and Outlook 2021.
