Reset Admin Password message

I'm assuming this is BT email related.  I have a private domain email address which forwards to my [email protected] email address.  I keep getting the following message from the ~~~~@btinternet address to my private domain address which then forwards it to my BT inbox:

"The password of your account with user name admin will expire in 10 day(s). Please change the password as soon as possible"

Can someone point me in the right direction - the only admin password I'm aware of is on my BT router.

Re: Reset Admin Password message

It is a scam. DO NOT respond to it.

BT will not ask you to change your password by email. If your email account has been compromised BT will lock your email account and notify you when you next try to log on.

If you log onto your BTMail account and hover your mouse over the email address that the email is purporting to be from, it will not doubt not be a BT.com email address.

If it is advising that your BT hub's admin password needs changing this will also not be from BT. The only time the BT hub's admin password needed changed was on older hubs that required it the first time you logged onto the hub's admin page in order to change it from the default factory set password.

Re: Reset Admin Password message

That's the odd thing - the message says it's coming from my own email address, is addressed to my personal domain address and doesn't ask for a response.  I agree, it certainly looks like a scam but I can't think how it could possibly work.   The number of days to the supposed password cancellation is rolling down on a daily basis from 14 to now 10.

Do you think I should just sit on this until something either happens (ie lockout) or the messages just stop?

Re: Reset Admin Password message

I have never heard of any BT passwords expiring.

Are you sure that the email is not from a different company/account that you have registered with your BT email address and email is warning you of the expiry of that account.

Re: Reset Admin Password message

No, I've checked. I use MS Outlook POP because I'm old-school.  I've been with BT for at least 6 years and my private domain routing is easily changed should I change my IP / email provider.

I'm wondering now if this has been a phishing exercise, spoofing my btinternet address to send messages and it's picked up the private domain address.....  Very odd but certainly looks like a scam of some sort.

Thanks for your help - I'm going to sit back and see what happens in 10 days.
