It is a scam. BT does not use btinternet.com to send emails to its customers.

Do not click any links.

You can send the email to.

@BarryFitz  Notwithstanding the previous excellent advice, the big red flag is the one that hits you straight in the face, 'Dear Email User'. BT/EE aren't going to address a known customer like that, and if they did, they ought to be pulled to one side and told to have a word with themselves.

As you are clearly now aware, just report it as a phishing email and delete.

Dear Kimberlin

Thank you for pointing out “the red flag” which I didn’t realise was one.  Noted for future occasions.

Regards, BFG

Re: Scam email or not

BT do send emails addressed to just "Hello" or just an initial with no mention of the persons name. I have just received one confirming my mid-contract price increase. Every bit of the email matches the details of my contract and it came from updates.bt.com. The usual "trick" of hovering over a possibly spoofed email address to see if the email is genuine causes a little bit of concern as some of the links in the email link to https intelli-direct.com (no mention of BT).

In fact, I've just checked my BT email archive (97 emails) going back as far as 2020 and BT have NEVER used my name in any email.

@grahamm1

You are correct.

BT do send emails without the recipients full name or just an initial. In those instances the last 4 digits of the account number is usually shown at the top right hand side or if it is in relation to the bill it may contain the full account number within the text of the email.

The "Hello" or "Hi" emails without the name, initial or account digits are generally emails that are not necessarily specific to you but may be informative to your type of BT package. ie forth coming price rises.

Hover your mouse over the senders email address and this will show if the email did came from the BT.Com domain some other domain.

In all events if you are in any doubt do not click on any links and I would suggest that even if there is no doubt it is from BT I would still not use any links with the email.

If you are going to log into your accounts never click on links in any email to do this. Use your known safe way to log into your MyBT or your BTMail accounts or call BT 0330.1234.150 and ask in the the email is genuine.
