Unable to connect to BT Email via iphone or Outlook

Go to solution

I've been accessing my BTInternet email account via my iPhone native Mail app and MS Outlook on my Windows laptop for many years. This morning both the iPhone mail app and MS Outlook reported unable to connect to the BT servers. I am able to connect to BT Webmail. I changed the account password and confirmed still able to access BT webmail, then deleted and reinstalled the BTInternet account on the iPhone and Outlook with the new password – still unable to connect. I contacted BT tech Support – they say that it is not a fault with their equipment. I don’t see that it is a fault with Outlook and iPhone Mail – they both stopped working at the same time.

This same problem has occurred a couple of times in the past two years, but always rectified with a simple reload of the accounts – however, not this time. Any ideas what the solution is?

Are you presently a BT Broadband customer or are you paying for your email through a BT Premium email account?

If neither of the above your email account may have been downgraded to a BTMail Basic account which can not be used with an email client

Re: Unable to connect to BT Email via iphone or Outlook

It is probably a BT server problem. The best advice when it happens is to do nothing, especially do not change passwords or delete the account from your phone or computer as that can cause more problems than it solves.

The first thing to do when it happens is check to see if you can log on to your email account via a web browser. If you can there is obviously nothing wrong with your password or account hence the advice to do nothing.

If the problem did not resolve its self after a day or two or in your instance where you have deleted the email account from your devices you should stop your iPhone and laptop from checking for email. The easiest way of doing that is to turn them off if you still have the account on your device or add a couple of characters to the email address so that it is not checking your account. If you have deleted the account and it is no longer on your device do not try and add it at this time.

You should also re start the devices at this point.

Once you have done that, change your email password again and check that you can access your email via webmail.

If that works you should wait at least an hour to allow the servers to sync and then add the new password to your iPhone, remembering to remove any characters you may have added and again check it works. If it does then move onto your laptop.

When entering the settings, make sure that in the Outgoing server you do not use the "use same as incoming" for the email address and password. Enter them manually.

If the above does not resolve the problem, when you change your BT password on an iPhone it may only change for INCOMING mail.

To change the outgoing mail password you have to go into Settings; then scroll down to Passwords & Accounts or on older devices Mail, Contacts, Calendars. From there select the BT email account and select the account where it is listed under IMAP.

You will find the details for the account and can change the password for the Incoming server there, the outgoing mail server only shows SMTP and mail.btinternet.com You have to tap on that Primary Server in order to find where the Outgoing password is hidden so you can update it.

When setting up the email account on your devices you are best to set it up manually, using "other" and ensure that you are using the correct settings as per this link.

Thanks very much for your comprehensive response. Unfortunately I had already deleted the account from my iPhone and Outlook. Now I have reinstalled them, but a whole new set of problems in Outlook - it generates a second account suffixed with (1), which has it's own pst file, and I can't make it use my original pst file - what a ridiculously complex system Outlook is!

If I remember correctly, you should have had the choice of either creating a new . PST file or use an existing one.

In any case, you can simply add the old .PST to the account as an extra data file.

You could replace the "new" .PST files with the "old" .PST files or copy and paste the contents of the "old" files into the "new" files.

If you do an Internet search on moving the old .PST files to a new PST file you should be able to find a guide that you can follow. It should also tell you where on your laptop the file is stored.

Prior to doing that check that Outlook is set to leave a copy of your emails on the server and is actually working with your BTMail.
