How strange. Yes works when I swap the batteries for alkaline. So it looks like I may have had new dodgy batteries?

I doubt it makes much difference to be honest. The problem is the phones, not the batteries. Amazon Basic are probably as good as any. £10.82 for a pack of 12 currently under item number B07NX1DSMP.
Funnily enough my phone rang this afternoon for the first time in months & the batteries died the minute I lifted it from the cradle. I've had many makes in them & they all die without regular use/discharge.
I do have an intelligent battery charger that can sometimes refresh them. I really ought to just cycle them for other sets but never remember.
So best option is probably to buy some additional spares & occasionally completely discharge the ones in the handsets by putting them in a torch, radio or similar.
