You can get "briefcase" petrol generators that are fairly quiet and will supply sufficient power. Branded names start at about £300 upwards. 

Obviously the more devices you want to run the more powerful the generator will need to be and bigger means more cost.

Thank you - I will look into that.  We've managed without for years, but it would be nice to be able to use the fridge during a power cut.
