Obviously it’s your choice , but why don’t you want the upgrade to FTTP , if you are currently on ADSL the speed uplift , even if you are getting very good ADSL speeds of 15Mb to 18Mb the change to FTTP ( presumably giving you ‘Essential’ Fibre at a minimum, that’s broadband of 40Mb ) will to be transformative, more so than someone going from 80 to 150 Mb , it will be a huge noticeable increase, not to mention the option of going much faster 900/1600Mb if you wish , but obviously you may have your reasons .
TBH , I’m assuming that calling to decline the Openreach FTTP installation offer doesn’t also decline the DV migration, there is no reason why it should , but if it does presumably BT will contact you in the future to migrate you to BTDV but without the FTTP element .
There is no current date to remove SoADSL or SoGEA so once you are on one of these SoADSL in your case , there is no further compulsion, that’s until OR get sick if running copper and fibre networks , but that’s many years away , however when it comes to renewing your contract or changing ISP , you won’t have a choice but to take FTTP , which basically fixes you what you have now , on a out if contract price ( which is usually poor value ) and on a very slow (in comparison) product.
there will be many that would ‘bite your hand off’ to be offered what you apparently don’t want .
I apologise for not being aware that BB didn't require Fibre BB. I had assumed that my ADSL was also going to be switched off by Jan 2027 but you say it isn't. I hope the BT operative I'm going to speak to shortly is also au fait with this knowledge.
Just to clarify, the block on the outside wall is a CSP , the mains powered ‘modem’ type device is the ONT , and within reason the ONT can be pretty much where you want it.
As you know going into DV requires a phone connection to the SH2 (or the extension wiring to be modified to connect to the hub ) , if it’s not practical to have the ONT near where the router is ( you can have the ONT where you need it in most cases ) , and your instinct is the ‘best’ place for the ONT is where the master socket currently is , and that has no mains outlet for the ONT , and even if there was you don’t want the router and telephone near where the master socket currently is , then fair enough, I’m not actually trying to convince you otherwise …..as stated the ONT doesn’t need to be near the master socket unless that’s what you want ….
finally no apologies necessary as far as not realising FTTP and DV are different rollouts , as a frequent ( expert ) poster I just assumed you had read about this before now .
If the call is to cancel FTTP it’s likely to be Openreach not BT that will answer , but that’s a guess , and TBH , no explanation is necessary, just say I don’t want to go onto FTTP yet as it’s not practical.
Personally, I’d go for the upgrade to FTTP, if for no other reason than the fact that they are making you upgrade, so that presumably means they can’t use it as an excuse to initiate a new two-year contract.
In my case, if I went to them and asked for an upgrade to FTTP now, I’m pretty sure they’d use it as an excuse to lock me in for another two years (and I’m pondering leaving for someone cheaper).
Incidentally, as pointed out the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) doesn’t need to be anywhere near the master socket, or even the same room but also, as it’s ethernet, the connection between the ONT and your router could, theoretically, be as long as 100m. If you don’t mind tacking a bit of ethernet cable to the skirting board, the router could be anywhere in the house. The ONT will also run via an extension lead. So long as you can get power to it safely, it doesn’t need to be right next to a power point.
Yes. respectfully I understand all that and have prepared the necessary extension lead and multi socket outlets and have also bought 5m of Ethernet cable.
Fair enough.
Well, I had a conversation this afternoon with one department and then was passed to another. The latter said they could do nothing with the current open order essentially for DV with the OR appointment tagged on. They said it would be closed in about 5 days after which I could phone again and possible rearrange something else or just wait for the OR engineer to turn up on the day and virtually tell him/her to go away as I didn't want it!
Anyway I delved back into my last email from OR and found the cancellation button and pressed that whereupon I got a reply thanking me and confirming they will inform BT/EE of the changed status - saw that last time. Also I had had a text from OR that I has responded to but now put CANCEL and sent that off and to this I also got a response thanking me for letting me know and that I'd remain of my existing service and they would ask BT/EE to process the cancellation.
So all this is fine UNTIL the next time. As regards my Open Order in MYBT who knows what will happen to that, probably go to PENDING again.
It's a tedious game.
Yes, it’s all very strange.
When I got a letter saying they were moving me to DV the original date was June (’23). It didn’t seem to require a response and I was quite happy with it, so I left it at that. Come June and nothing happened.
It was one of the old mod team that got it moving for me again and the change went through in September, but he seemed to feel that it had been cancelled because I’d raised an objection. Very strange.
So my Digital Voice move has been completed and despite the migration order saying it was going to be Pay as you go for the calls package it has now successfully migrated and given me All inclusive calls at the same £0 as part of the broadband deal I had with the PSTN line.
So well done BT for doing this correctly and honouring the original package price.
The Digital Voice adaptor order is still showing as failed so I have had to place the answer phone base close to the router and thus it is not ideal but I will chase up that soon.
So apart from it could of been a little clearer on the actual migration order I am happy with the move to Digital Voice.
