Re: Digital Voice with different Router

This was just what I was looking for to setup the smart hub in front of my Asus to allow the BT landline to work. Many many thanks Dude, so helpful!

Re: Digital Voice with different Router

Yes it works great.

The only 2 slight issues I ran into was (if anyone else hits these)

1. That I run a VPN on the Asus and I couldn't access my CCTV after this change from the internet. However it is accessible via the SH2 Wan interface directly, bypassing the VPN.

2. My JFFS code on the Asus to update my dynamic hosts address if the WAN IP changes no longer functions because the ASus now cannot determine the correct public WAN IP address, because it is now static and cannot retrieve the VPN assigned address. The SH2 can see the right address but the tools on the SH2 to manage Dynamic DNS/VPN are woeful with a limited choice of how to manage it and most either require a paid service or just do not work (DYNO-Matic for example now requiring an HTTPS instruction which the SH2 cannot provide.) Settled in the end for NOIP but have to keep in alive every 30 days manually. Which is a nuisance.

I may try the subsequent configuration example to see if this gives any benefits. But still, it works great and I'm very grateful for the solutions.

I have connected an ASUS DSL-AC55U. I needed an OpenVPN client which runs on it. IPv4 is fine but IPv6 does not work. Configuring v6 manually didn't work but even if it had the problem is that BT do not give fixed v6 addresses but dynamic ones!  So telephony as a specialised service means no IPv6 if one chooses the equipment to provide another specialised service i.e. VPN.

Re: Digital Voice with different Router

Glad to hear this allows the DV phones to work as I’ve been pondering the same problem.  It’s actually not a new technique.  I used the same design years ago to run a Billion 7800 through a Home Hub 5b when VDSL first came out.  (The Billion didn’t support VDSL).

The only problem with this, as I’m sure other people will confirm, is that it creates a double NAT scenario and this is probably what’s breaking the VPNs etc.  The solution on the Home Hub 5 was to configure the Billion as a DMZ host of the Home Hub.   I don’t know whether the Smart Hub will support the same idea.  It would be interesting if someone could confirm if it works or not.

Placing the BT router in the DMZ and forwarding all traffic to your own router works as does ipv6 if your router supports passthrough mode. I've posted screenshots before if you search through.

Yes, sorry if I'm covering the same ground.  94 replies was a bit much to wade through, so I only glanced through them and was just responding to the last two comments.  Nice to know the Smart Hub 2 does support a DMZ host then.  Useful to know when I get upgraded.

(Mind you, I'm usually last in the queue for anything, so by that time BT will have abandoned DV anyway).

Thanks but my router doesn't support passthrough mode. I did the IPv4 DMZ trick and also tried the v6 pinholes to no avail.

Have you looked at the Merlin firmware? That's what I run on my ASUS and it has Passthrough
