Digital voice upgrade to full fibre

Go to solution

Hi, I’ve been sent a text with an appointment for openreach engineer to attend to set me up. Obviously I was expecting full info to be sent to me beforehand to make informed decision whether I want this upgrade or not. Besides the point now.
here is what i need to understand. I currently have a smart hub 2 which is working fine with 2 black bt discs extending my wifi to unreachable places in the house. Could I still use both the smart hub 2 and the discs on the new upgraded system? If not do i get another type of router with set of new discs? Thank you in p p for your assistance.

Assuming the SH2 you have has a green telephone socket on back then you can continue with your existing setup when upgraded/changed just need to connect phone to socket on back of hub

If, as the title suggests, this an upgrade to FULL fibre (that is FTTP and not FTTC) then you'll have an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed by Openreach and you'll need to connect its output terminal to the WAN socket on your Smarthub 2 with an ethernet cable, as well as connecting your phone cable to the socket on the hub. The Openreach technician should do this. Your old Master Socket will be redundant.

Hi, thanks for your responses. Actually I’m not bothered about the phone line working or not. I want to know if the wireless black discs currently extending my wifi seamlessly all around my house still works with the new fttp set up. Unfortunately i was not given any information as to what this upgrade entails and whether my smart hub 2 will be replaced with another hub or not? What will happen with my wifi being extended to unreachable spots in my home.

does your existing SH2 have ability to change ethernet port 4 to WAN input required for FTTP.  if it does then existing SH2 is ok if not you need a new SH2.  However the position of the ONT (fibre modem) may not be where the existing master socket is placed and your hub is connected so you may need to re-locate you hub which may affect you disc connections

Re: Digital voice upgrade to full fibre

Hi, thank you for the response. In gonna attach a picture of the back of my sh2. As you’ll see the wan port is there hence 3 Ethernet and 1 single wan port. So would it be safe to assume that my black discs still work with this hub after the upgrade? But i may have to relocate them depending on where my hub is at right?  Currently my hub is in my converted loft with my bttv box and i want to keep this location which means they will have to install the ont box on the outside wall at ground floor level but to connect they will have to run whatever cable (I’m assuming Ethernet cable)? To my sh2 upstairs through the bottom of the window or straight through the wall whichever easier for them. But i need to know if they will run the cable from ont to the back of sh2 at loft level or not because the loft is where I’m at as their customer

  • Ps it’s not allowing me to attach pictures of back of my sh2 but yes it has a wan port

to add a photo you use the camera icon how to upload photo.PNG

does your existing phone cable come from pole and attach to bracket at roof level?

the CSP is the box on outside wall and the ONT (fibre modem) is fitted internal and needs a power supply ont-pon.jpg

Yes sorry my bad I’ve confused the 2 boxes so yes my connection pole is outside which serves all the houses in this cul de sac. So the csp will be installed on the outside and ont has to be installed inside at roof level which is a short distance of cable run to back of my sh2

does the existing cable attach to a bracket at roof/eaves level or somewhere else?  the CSP will be installed at ground level.  Is you loft fully converted making a new room?

Yes we have a bracket at roof level where the existing bt cable attaches.  Yes the csp can be installed outside at ground level no problem but the ont has to be installed inside at loft level and yes loft is fully converted to make a big room. I manage to reduce the size of the picture of the back of my sh2
