How to send a text from a landline

I have a problem with my phone.  One of the ways of contacting BT is to send a text.  But how do I send a text on a landline?  The keys have both numbers and letters but no matter which buttons I press I always get numbers rather than letters.  What do I do?

You need a compatible phone for a start, and then select text messaging
