I have a DIGITAL PHONE does this make my existing PANASONIC 4 telephone set redundant?

No. If you mean you have a digital phone hand set, you do not need to use that.
If you still want to use the Panasonic set, connect the master base station of the set to the green phone socket on the BT hub and your other Panasonic phones will continue to connect through that in the same way as they did before your landline moved to Digital Voice.
I've had a Panasonic quad set on Digital Voice connected to the Smart Hub for three years now. Works just the same as it always did.
What you may find, if it is an answer phone, is that it is worth going into MyBT and the Digital Voice management then resetting the Voice Mail Essentials so the 1571 service answers after the full 10 rings. You can then set the Panasonic to answer after, say, 5 rings, so it's answer phone kicks in first.
