Re: Potential scam call but confirmed as legitimate by BT?

I find it odd that you posted on the forum seeking reassurance that the call was a scam and when it was confirmed that it was a scam along with the evidence as to why it was a scam which included links and a copy of BT's own web pages showing it was a scam that you were confused and still continued to seek the opinion of the BT customer service dept who clearly don't have a clue.

Hopefully no damage has been done and your father is now wiser how to avoid being scammed in the future.

It does show the need for vigilance, scammers can be very clever , they can and do manipulate genuine systems to make it appear their ‘call’ is genuine , but as a general rule , if they ask you to switch on your computer, tell them to do one, hopefully no harm done , and your father will be more sceptical next time , unfortunately it’s likely now that they have had some ‘success’ they may try again.

Re: Potential scam call but confirmed as legitimate by BT?

Just had this.  it is NOT legitimate. BT confirmed not legitimate.

But, the scammer does use BT to provide / email a 4 pin code - by asking BT for a password reset - the scammer knows your BT account id but not your password.  Your then receive a 4 digit pin with no explanation as to what is is for, or nay warning, so you assume its ok, and it has come from BT.  The called then asks for this code.  This is a very clever scan which eventually gives your PC access to the scammer via the AnyDesk application.  BE WARNED>

A simple security improvement would be to specifically state why the code was sent in the text/email etc.  That way people would know it was sent in response to a password reset request.
