Re: Wifi 7 hub ?

Go to solution

Hi there

I currently have bt fibre 500, and a business customer use the Bt home hub 3. I wanted to upgrade to a WiFi 7 router, maybe something like an Asus Rt-Be88u. But someone said digital voice wouldn't work, as it needs the bt router to work. Is this correct? If so, any ideas if bridging, to a 2nd router would overcome the problem??

Digital Voice does require the Smarthub 2 how ever if you are a BT Business customer there are other options.

If you are a BT Business customer you should post on the BT Business Form where you will get more relevant information.

Thank you for replying, I do appreciate it.

But also, on another point, the business just isn't quite as good as this one or that popular!!

If you have a Home Hub 3 ,then you obviously can’t be on DV yet , so presumably your concern is if you swap out the router now , it won’t affect your current telephony (which must still be PSTN or VoIP but not DV ) but when you are migrated to DV you will have an issue ….many do use the SH2 just for telephony and a third party router for most other things , there are some minor issues with this setup , but nothing to be overly concerned about

We definitely have digital voice, we changed over last year when started a new fibre contract. That is our house number, but we also have a voip number which is used for the business. I believe it's the smart hub 3, not home hub 3.

What kind of issues ?

Thank you for the link, I'll give it a good reading over. Looks a bit over my head in terms of information, but happy to learn.

In real world terms , apparently it’s not a big deal , but ‘double natting’ is something to be aware of, there are many (some that post on this forum ) that use a second router , wired from the SH2 to do the heavy lifting as far as connecting devices is concerned , leaving the SH2 (or the SH3 in your case ) to handle the telephony and syncing with the Openreach FTTC /FTTP equipment

Re: Wifi 7 hub ?

I run a Draytek router through an SH2.  The SH2 is just to provide the phone.  The Draytek runs my network.

Don’t use the DMZ host setting, don’t use port forwarding and never had a problem with double NAT.  Then again, my network is fairly simple, no servers and I’m not a gamer.  The client VPN I sometimes use also works without issue.

So, just to provide a balance, double NAT is not always a problem.  It depends on what you are actually doing.
