Re: Use SH2 for digital voice and Asus router for wired / wifi internet

Go to solution

Disabled  the DHCP and WIFI in BT SH2 so that ASUS is in control

Connected to cable to OpenReach Master Socket and BT SH2.

Connected Phone to the phone connector... left it for a few mins... Checked phone.  Dial tone.  Yippee!

Plugged LAN cable from WAN on ASUS DSL-AX82U to Port 1  on BT SH2

The WAN on the ASUS DSL-AX82U was previously set to PPPoE - I swapped it to Static IP (picture attached)
static IP: 192.168.1.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.254

Having made the connection I never got an internet connection  -

Have been force to remove the BT SH2 and revert to the ASUS at the front end back to PPPoE

I'm guessing I've got the WAN setup wrong?

Any suggestions?

Connect to DNS Server automatically - Yes is not available! with the Static IP

Drop down option suggest varius DNS server-  maybe Google 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4?

WAN Type - DSL is only option

the next drop down offers two options
ADSL WAN (ATM)
VDSL WAN (PTM)

You can disable 802 1q, that is handled by the hub

Is there a fundamental setting somewhere to change the input from DSL port to wan port?

Checking into that - will try in the morning to see if by changing Dual Wan I can either change WAN or set a LAN port to a WAN?

Re: Use SH2 for digital voice and Asus router for wired / wifi internet

I'm pretty sure there must be a way to change the WAN type from DSL to Static IP so that the device expects internet connection via the WAN port rather than the DSL port.

Hopefully our resident Asus guru @TimCurtis will be along to help

A big thank you to @licquorice for asking the right questions and helping me to SOLV the issues of how to fix our current network so we could keep our existing mesh network that uses wired backhaul (the joys of having a super insulated modern house) AND retain our BT landline

Here is a recap

1) ORIGINAL SET-UP
OpenReach Master Socket -> ASUS DSL-AX82U
(This setup used PPPoE) worked brilliantly Attached to the this router were 7 AP acting a wireless hubs though out the house.

New set-up where we needed to maintain our landline and use BT digital voice.

OpenReach Master Socket -> BT SH2 -> ASUS DSL-AX82U

Within SH2 I went into the advance section of the BT SH2 hub manager via 192.168.1.254 and turned off DHCP and Wireless. You'll need the password details on the back of the hub.

Out of the box the ASUS ASUS DSL-AX82U IP address range is setup as 192.168.50.1 to 192.168.50.254 so this was blessing in that we did not need to make any changes here.

2) NEW SET-UP to maintain using our BT Landline
OpenReach Master Socket -> BT SH2 -> ASUS DSL-AX82U
An ethernet cable is run from the blue WAN port on the ASUS DSL-AX82U to port 1 on the BT SH 2

The tricky bit was making the change to a WAN on the ASUS DSL-AX82U

It failed the first few times, this is where questioning by @licquorice was so helpful and I was able to research the issue

Under WAN the out of the box setting for the ASUS DSL-AX82U is the WAN Type is set a DSL , and on this page this cannot be changed.

WAN Type needs to be changed from DSL to WAN. To do this one has to go to another ASUS WAN tab: Dual WAN
Enable Dual WAN: OFF
Primary WAN: change from DSL to WAN (the other option was USB)
Then Apply. <- it took about 60 seconds for this to apply

Once this is done all that remains is to edit the Internet Connection for the WAN

WAN type: WAN (previously set to DSL)
WAN Connection Type: Static IP
Enable WAN: Yes
Enable NAT: Yes
Enable UPnP: Yes

Enable 802.1Q: No <- handled by BTSH2

IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 <- BT SH2 gateway

There was one more ASUS setting and we used the drop down to pick two DNS servers, We picked Google.

That's it. All working. Thank you @licquorice for your help
