Vulnerable adult needs landline on old copper line

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help.

My uncle needs a new landline on the old copper line as the original one was disconnected after the bill payer passed away and the bill wasn't paid.

I have spoken to a BT advisor who suggested this is not possible and that digital voice is the now only option in his area. This will not be possible as an engineer will not be permitted access to the property, by my uncle who is unwell, to install the equipment. The area is now full fibre.

My understanding is that the copper lines are still available but are not offered as a means of landline/broadband if the update has been rolled out in that area.

Is there any way I can get this done?

Many thanks in advance.

if you enter your uncle's address and post the results including notes this will show what is available and also if address is a fibre only area bearing in mind the old PSTN has a switch off date of January 2027

Re: Vulnerable adult needs landline on old copper line

You won’t be able to order an old style PSTN phone service, but even if you could , if no access to the property is available, then that could be an problem, there is no guarantee that the cable pair is still intact from the equipment (in the exchange or the cabinet ) to the existing socket on the wall from the previous service …if its reconnected remotely but doesn’t work what then ? that also assumes FTTP is not available, if its then the existing copper pair is irrelevant the new service has to be installed as FTTP so access would obviously be required.

You can’t order a PSTN phone service , you could  order broadband and BTDV ( the IP phone service from BT ) and hope the appropriate ‘connection’ is restored without a visit and all you need to do is fit the router (sent in the post ) and connect a phone to the router , that’s  how many services are provided without an actual visit , Openreach only visit the address if the customer calls to say the activation date has passed but there still no service at the socket , the tech then visits to effectively repair the service rather than install from scratch.

It is possible  to order a phone service without broadband but it’s not clear how that is achieved , there are two possibilities, one by providing broadband but not charging for it so you still get a ‘router’ to plug a phone into , or you are connected to an ATA in the exchange and use the master socket as you would normally, this has the advantage of not needing any mains powered equipment like the router , but it’s not clear which method people would get as it’s pretty unusual for new customers to only want a phone service

TBH , in the circumstances a mobile service ( you can get phones that look like landline phones but have a SIM in them ) may be a better choice

You could try ordering a phone service & see what happens. As @iniltous has alluded to, it may be that the DV service is provided back at the exchange, so transparent to the user.

Be aware that if you go for a GSM desk phone, that many that were available worked on 3G, so will be shortly obsolete.

If the area is full fibre I'd say there's absolutely zero chance of getting a standard landline as there'll be a stop/sell on it

If the property is in a good mobile phone signal area can you not get him a mobile phone and call package. It will possibly cost less than a BT Landline and call package assuming you are able to get one.

Re: Vulnerable adult needs landline on old copper line

Openreach are bringing out, or already have a service where people can still have an analogue phone.

Cant remember what it’s called but I’m pretty sure it’s only for those on Life Lines, Alarm Systems, etc.

Also they said it’ll cease to work once the Exchange is closed, which could be in 1 year or 10 years.

Re: Vulnerable adult needs landline on old copper line

SoTAP for analogue is the product that allows a service that is outwardly similar to the PSTN telephone service , intended as a short term solution for phone only customers after the PSTN switch off .

It  appears similar in nature to a ‘regular’ telephone service in that no mains powered device is required for the phone instrument to connect to , so no local power requirements, but it’s not really an analogue service , it’s still IP telephony (BTDV in BT’s case ) , just the analogue telephone adapter (ATA) is located at the exchange rather than a part of , or connected to a broadband router at the customer s address.

This short term solution isn’t for  new customers who only want a phone service and is of no use in FTTP areas where the low bandwidth broadband product for phone only customer is the solution, as this SoTap for analogue has a limited life not least because of exchange closures
