2.5 Gigabit Ethernet

Go to solution

Hi, I'm building a computer and the motherboard I've bought has a 2.5 gigabit Ethernet port on it. Will this work with the Home Hub 6?

Home Hub 6 and the Smart Hub 2 have Gigabit Ethernet (IEE 802.3) ports. So it won't be able to negotiate at a higher rate even if your network card on your PC can.

Sorry for being a noob but does that mean I can't plug the Home Hub 6 into a 2.5 GB Ethernet port or that I can, it just won't take advantage of the higher speed but will still work?

You can plug it in but it will only negotiate at 1Gb rather than 2.5Gb. A link can only work at the speed of the fastest device.

The latter. You can still connect to the home hub 6 via Ethernet but your PC's network card will drop down to the maximum speed the home hub 6 can negotiate at.
