Obviously you are far more knowledgeable then myself but isn't it so that only the black wifi discs work with the SH2.

No, it is the reverse, the black discs only work with the SH2, not the SH2 only works with the black discs.

White discs will work with any router but will not form a mesh with the SH2 as the black discs do.

You have to connect the first white disk to the SH2 (or any broadband hub) with an ethernet cable and then the other discs form a mesh with that one. The white discs are thus more versatile than the black ones, which form a mesh ONLY with the SH2.
They are of course limited to WiFi 5 - if you want WiFi 6 or 7 you have to get third party discs, of which quite a few are offered from the likes of Netgear and TP-Link.
