BTHub2

Background
Recently received new hub after waiting a year due to a mismatch with freeview box.
Repeated issues finally resolved by tech support identifying despite complaints, was told it would be sent out a year ago!

Hub2 issues - it wouldn't work, admin requires internet connection, spent best part of 6 hours and most on phone to BT. There rep told me admin did not need internet.

Put old hub back and next day plugged in  new hub to reset before sending back had got in once or twice to change name.
While waiting and repeat calling as visual stuff is zero use , finally got a human who was more knowledgeable and informed me I do need an internet connection, which she said I had, I tried admin and it came up. Apart from phone line nothing plugged in, a bit of trial and error and

Main Issue :- I discovered if you have an ethernet cable plugged into WAN and phone in it gets confused and defaults to full fibre.

Secondary Issues -
Dual band , not being able to have an ssid fir each band  means you have to switch off 5ghz while yo reconnect all your smart 2.4ghz devices and as only 1 network name this was a real pain. I didn't want the hassle of family, network devices etc having issues if I used the old 2.4 name.  I was told latest smart software would be easy to reconfigure that was a lie, lights etc needed to all be done individually. They should have kept the two SSIDs if only to make the switch over easier.

5 ghz devices keep connecting at lower speed. Tech support told me that shouldn't happen and its nothing to do with BT/EE.

Downloads of only 20mb constantly timeout and drop connection

Performance Test  Between yesterday and today this has dropped from the admin, past experience has told me their are always issues for a few days, when I ran it yesterday it said faults detected, book an engineer, however I did independent test and seemed ok, not being charged for callout when they claim it's not BT.

Of course BT could have a system that reads in the old saved hub conf  file and converts it to BT2 but that would mean spending their profits on customer service.

Full Fibre I cannot wait until my contract ends and can get full fibre City Link have a conbection from a pole at the bottom of my garden, they asked to put ladders up in my garden as access to it was blocked by a vehicle.

Re: BTHub2

If course it doesn't need an internet connection to access the hub admin page.

Why are you plugging something into a WAN port?

Port 4 only becomes a WAN port if you manually configure it for FTTP use, otherwise it is a LAN port.

Common SSID for both bands has been a feature of the hub since day1 many years ago.

Re: BTHub2

BT tech support stated latest firmware needs internet connection for Admin.

I jyst plugged in all my oorts as for old BT hub, the ibstructiobs stated WAN was standard port unless full fivre.

Pergaps stip guessing as not helpful, I am reporting issues to hekp others you are not helping.

I installed BT digital exchanges and installations   , ran the bigest comms  hub back in the 70s, sat on the commitees defining IP protocols. Retired IT  communications expert  including IT and security for major UK and US corps.

Shared SSID for both bands makes it easy for them not customers  so gardly a good feature.

Re: BTHub2

I repeat, you DO NOT need an internet connection to access the hub admin page, the idea is absurd.

As also stated,  port 4 can be configured as either a LAN port or WAN port (full fibre mode) it has to be configured manually. You clearly don't understand the difference betwen WAN and LAN.

Although I don't personally agree, common SSID is considered best practice by industry.

Re: BTHub2

Apparently they sent me a smarthub plus yet it doesn't look like one, it matches a BT hub 2, unless they have put new firmware in it, it was updated yesterday.
The performance test option disappeared!

I was told by BT tech support it does need an internet connection, take out your "modem" cable and you will see you cannot access the admin, you could on the older hub but not on the one with the WAN port.
Yes I understand Local vs Wide area network, I had a NAS plugged in when I was setting it up. As I explained I just switched from the old to the new, plugging in all my old connections. I found out the hard way if you set it up without a connection in the Wan port it works.
It also does strange things with its address tables if you move the Ethernet cables between ports, duplicating devices on the ports.
I set up my static addresses saved the configuration. Reset it with only 2 wire copper  plugged in. Loaded saved conf and my devices could then connect.
I could recreate all the issues easily and its just an poorly implemented bit of kit with no decent end use testing done.

Re: BTHub2

Speaking as a retired IT tech myself, I agree 100% with Licquorice.

In fact, I’ve just tried unplugging the WAN connection and, sure enough, I can still access the hub admin page.

I suspect support were talking about their ability to access the hub if it is unplugged, but generally, most of the so called support don’t know their butt from their elbow.

If you need separate SSIDs, plug a separate WAP in.
