Ethernet connection in another room

hi.

I have fiber wired into my living room and i am wanting to have a wired ethernet cable to my computer in my spare bedroom.

There is an ethernet port in the spare room  already that was there before the fiber was fitted. Is that port now useless or is there anyway I can get it working with my fiber set up? Thanks

Re: Ethernet connection in another room

Depends where the other end of the cable is.

Any Ethernet port in the spare room will be cabled to another Ethernet port somewhere.

If that port is adjacent to your hub, just patch it to one of the LAN ports.

Are there ethernet ports in other rooms? If so then they likely go back to a multi-port ethernet patch panel. In new build these are often tucked away in cupboards as the ONT is expected to be there.

Re: Ethernet connection in another room

I don't have any other ethernet ports in the flat. Only phone line connections which I don't use as I don't have a landline. Could  those ports be connected to the old Internet set up that worked off of the landlines connection?

No there's juat the one port in the spare room. This flat was built around 2007. There are numerous phone line connections around the flat whi h I don't use as I don't have a landline

Hmm, don't understand that. A single Ethernet port is pointless. Are there any wires connected to it? It has to be wired to somewhere.

As @licquorice has alluded to, pop the faceplate off & check it's wired maybe post a pic). It could be an abandoned project that was never seen through

Re: Ethernet connection in another room

The usual arrangement in a situation like this would be as in the picture.

If you just wanted to connect the two rooms a cable between the two patch panel ports would do.  You wouldn't need a switch.

As people have said, that socket must be connected to somewhere.  Are you sure you are looking at an ethernet/RJ45 socket and not a phone/RJ11 socket?
