Fibre install

Hi all,

I have chosen BT for broadband in my first home, 500 Full Fibre. We have an ONT already on the wall, and our router is arriving at some point tomorrow.
BT have then messaged saying an engineer will be out on the 21st of November which is 3 weeks away. Can I not just plug my router in myself and see if it works? I’d understand the engineer coming if work was needed to get fibre to the property but seeing as it’s literally just a case of plugging the router in…

Hoping I can just do it myself as 3 weeks is a bit of a joke when it’s just there already, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you

Re: Fibre install

It won't work until the service is activated, it's not just a case of plugging the router in. No idea why an engineer is being sent though if there is already an ONT existing.

Re: Fibre install

Can’t hurt to connect the router to the ONT as soon as you receive it , as stated it’s weird to arrange an unnecessary engineer visit if an ONT is already fitted ,

Just out of curiosity , was the ONT switched off ( possibly at the mains )  when you moved in ?  if the previous occupant switched off the power to the ONT  , that ‘looks’ the same ( when testing ) as no ONT fitted at all , ( OR now put a sticker on the ONT asking it not to be removed as it wasn’t uncommon for the previous occupant to take the ONT away when they moved out  ) so if the power was ‘off’ , it’s possible that as a safeguard ( just in case the ONT is missing ) an engineer is arranged in case a new replacement ONT needs to be provided.

Obviously the chances of service working before whatever service start date you were given is slim but it costs nothing to connect the router and try it

Re: Fibre install

When I ordered FTTP with Vodafone an ONT was installed (along with the rest of the first time new provision work), the house had never had FTTP before. Vodafone made a mess of the account side of things and I ended up cancelling in the cooling off period. MJ Quinn (Sub) did the installation.

When I ordered with BT, MJ Quinn (Sub) visited again and installed a new ONT, then registered the serial number, as he described it.

I asked him why I needed a new ONT, he just said a new one had been ordered....

Whilst I accept my scenario is not the same on the face of it, I just mean its an example of an ONT being installed when there already was one.
