Hi
I've got an ongoing issue that I fear is now approaching deadlock.
I'm paying for full fibre 900 and the speed to the Smart Hub 2 is capable of reaching 949mb, although it has dropped below the fast service guarantee 7 times in the past 7 days; as low as 321mb download speed. On top of this, I can experience speeds to the device as low as 35mb (yes, you read that correctly).
I have previously been told it was a router problem, so was given a replacement SH2 but that didn't resolve the device speed issue. Today I've had an Openreach engineer here who has replaced the ONT as they confirmed the wrong brand was initially installed (Huawei when it should have been Nokia). They also moved the location of the ONT to ensure no wiring was bending too much etc.
However, the speed to the SH2 was then immediately down to 601mb AFTER these changes. Device speeds are around 200mb.
What makes it even worse is that inexplicably the device speed maxes out at around 70mb when using LAN; which makes even less sense.
I have seen BT comms that state the SH2 is incapable of anything over 600/700mb to devices anyway.
Has anyone else experienced similar? At this stage I will be going to the ombudsmen as, quite frankly, this feels like mis-selling when BT themselves know the router is incapable of producing the wifi speed to make the incoming fibre speed. I am aware that the T&Cs only guarantee speed to the Hub but to me this is a separate issue when BT actively know the SH2 is insufficient. During this period I was also told to take out the Halo device to ensure full coverage; which again, was entirely pointless!
Equally, I am still left paying a LOT of money per month for a service and speed that is significantly worse than the previous broadband! I feel that I have been mis-sold my product and fear other less technically knowledgable customers will experience the same.
I'm getting de ja vue as I'm having almost identical on going issues!!
BT promise lots and deliver little!
I'm on the same package.
I just ran a speedtest on fast.com which showed 936 Mb/s to my laptop, which is connected to the SH2 via a Cat 6 cable. On WiFi, the same laptop gets between 240 and 350 Mb/s depending on where I am in the house. My Android phone just got 180 Mb/s.
So the SH2 is capable of delivering decent speeds.
What makes it even worse is that inexplicably the device speed maxes out at around 70mb when using LAN; which makes even less sense.
You need to be using a cable that is at least Cat 5e to get above 100 Mb/s, so it could be that your cable is either not, or is faulty?
As you've said, BT (as is common with all ISPs) only guarantee speed to the Hub.
Yes, I've got the Cat 5e cable but still only getting around 70mb. Interestingly, even though the guarantee covers the speed to the SH2 then if I'm using LAN that should give me that same speed as the SH2 receives - should it not? If that's the case then surely BT are absolutely failing on the speed guarantee. To be fair, they are anyway as I can evidence the drop in speeds to the SH2 itself anyway.
At 70 Mb/s on a Cat 5e cable something is definitely wrong. I'd be checking:
