trying to extend my wifi by placing a Halo Disc in a metal shed in the garden and it won't connect. Is it likely to be the metal that's prevent access?

I expect the metal shed is acting like a faraday cage and blocking the wifi signal

Yes plus it will also depend how far the shed is from the BT Hub. If there is a window in the shed place the disc beside the window and it might be able to get a signal.
Regardless of the metal shed, it's a common misconception to think you can place a mesh/extender where the signal is weak. You have to either place them at the edge of the router's range where there is still a reasonable signal, so that they can "relay" that signal, or hard wire by ethernet.
