Help with my 500mbps fibre please

Hopefully I can get some info and help here if possible.....new to the community and also recently have 500mbps(?) fibre installed.

I have a SH2 (Wifi5? 802.11) and digital voice connected via the hub, 4 total BT discs around the house with a total of around (depends on time of day etc) 22 devices using the 2.5 and 5 bands.

The speeds of wireless are hopeless 172(down)/63(up) on my Mac and 164(down)/63(up) on my iPhone but the numbers are half or worse than that on mobile if checked anywhere else in the house.

There are 2 computers, 1 or 2 iPads (depending on the day), 3 phones (iPhone), 1 apple speaker, 4 Alexa units, a Blink camera setup (2 blinks sync things and 3 cameras), a Ring alarm and a Ring camera/doorbell, home thermostats x2 (Honeywell) all on wi fi not all functioning at the same time as we don't really stream much during the day and what is streamed is connected to the LAN ports ie Sony TV, Apple TVbox, Marantz Amp.......

That's about it and I'm scratching my head why the speeds are so randomly awful.

I appreciate that my knowledge is poor (I was a satcoms engineer not IT) but over some years ago.

Can anyone suggest a sensible way to set this up please - it's just that most "stuff" these days is wireless as you can see above - no LAN inputs and no wires around the house.

I was looking at the Linksys Hydra6 as a possible router but then the BT discs probably won't work with it.

If there is any way to do this or anyone has any suggestions I would be extremely grateful.

We're in Wales and this is the first of the fibre links that have been put into our town, previously we were on the fibre to cabinet at 70mbps and landline. I'm almost regretting the changeover which has taken from the end of March until a week or so ago.

Regards in hope

Re: Help with my 500mbps fibre please

Have you checked what speed you're getting to your hub through the my bt app? Also run speed tests on devices at the same time, add them upp and see if they add to around 500

Re: Help with my 500mbps fibre please

this is from another post

You are unlikely to get anything like the full speed over wireless, on a single device.

It was never intended that people get full speed on all devices, especially on a wireless connection. The intention is to allow that bandwidth to be shared among family members and multiple devices, without each user noticing any slowdown.

Here is a quote from old post by @SeanD

"I think for the first time ever we are in a situation whereby the speed you can now get through Full Fibre outperforms the capabilities of many devices.

The Smart hub 2 does not come with Wi-Fi 6 but this is something we are looking to include in our next generation of Hub.  I don't have any info as to when we will launch a new router by Wi-Fi 6 will bring some improvement.

As an example of what I mean in terms of devices not being able to support the full breadth of speed available on Full Fibre , take a look at the table below.  This is just for a couple of Apple Smart Phones and Tablets along with  popular Samsung models,

Apple (Smartphones) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
IPHONE SE Yes 60mbps 300mbps
IPHONE SE 2020 Yes 135mbps

600mbps

Samsung (Smartphones) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
galaxy-s10e Yes 135mbps 600mbps
galaxy-s10-5g Yes 135mbps 600mbps

Apple (Tablets) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
IPAD pro 3rd gen (Nov 2018) Yes 135mbps 600mbps
IPAD pro 4th gen (March 2020) Yes 135mbps 600mbps

Samsung (Tablet) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
galaxy-tab-s5e Yes 100mbps 300mbps
galaxy-tab-s6 Yes 60mbps 600mbps

You can run it on iPad Mac and iPhone at the same time. Make sure they start around the same time
