High ping from private IP need help!

Go to solution

I play a mobile game called RO Next generation, the servers are located on 34.36.47.246. I regularly get high ping from hop 3 which is 172.16.11.165. This is meant to be the isp private node.

I'm trying to report the fault and get this fixed as it was fine two weeks ago, is there anyone who can help or forward this for me?

Regards,

Chi

Hi @chi2814

This is a bit above my level of expertise. However, we have a lot of fantastic, knowledgeable users who may be able to offer you some advice here soon.

If you think it's an issue on our end, I recommend speaking with our technical support team so that they can check everything from our end, and run through some diagnostic tests with you.

When you are connecting to a game service you really only need to worry about the ping to the final destination and that you are not losing a *significant* number of packets.

If your ping to the final game server is 12ms @99.99% , you don't need to worry that it took an intermediate server 30ms to respond and only had a 25% response rate.  Your connection the the final node is still 12ms @99.99%.

Busy private nodes used for intermediate routing will often prioritize traversing packets of data, rather than pings! What's worse is monitoring everything all the time with tools like pingplotter can introduce ping spikes, and worse still people who run constant background speedtests actually end up throttling their own connections and introduce more lag!

If the router you are using is an Asus GT6, then I'd forget active tools such pingplotter for now, and use the similar tools built into the router that are based on passive monitoring.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Thank you for the replies,

My issue was somewhat fixed, I did have my data passed onto a BT engineer by a BT guide and the went away the following day. Kudos to that BT guide, as other BT guide claimed it was my home mesh network causing the lag spikes and tried to sell me their BT disc instead.

For future reference nodes 2 or 3 are generally isp BRAS nodes that needs their engineer to look into. The high ping (Apparently) caused by high load in the area causing packets to be queued and thus the high ping.

If you're having high ping in those nodes, just contact an engineer.
