Re: How good are Ethernet Powerline Adaptors?

The discussion was about powerline adapters. Many (if not most) have both Ethernet ports and WiFi.

I think you misunderstand how powerline adapters work.

The primary adapter connects to the router via Ethernet and the secondary adapters provide both ethernet and WiFi capability.

It was you that brought up and stated that Powerline adaptors could not be used with wireless devices and it was because of that misleading statement that that wireless Powerline Adaptors were mentioned.

Wireless Powerline Adaptors are seldom if ever referred to as Hybrid Powerline Adaptors in their marketing or packaging to the consumer.

Re: How good are Ethernet Powerline Adaptors?

Many thanks for the many replies!

My reading of them is that for the for the PARTICULAR “mains context” as outlined ....

Both TP-link and Devolo sell a range of adaptors claiming to deliver “up to” 2,000 Mbps.  In our case ...

  • Both adapters would be powered via different circuit breakers in the consumer unit.
  • The adaptor at the front of the house would have to be on an extension lead which would also power the Router.

... it is hard to predict what the actual speed between the adaptors might be.

Thus I should not rely on being to get most of FF300 transmitted this way!

What I actually said was “IPads, iPhones and many other devices do not have ethernet ports so Powerline Adapters will be of limited utility”. Not all powerline adapters broadcast wi-fi and not all of those that do provide seamless transfer when a small hand-held device like an iPhone is moved from one part of the house to another. Hence, the limited utility.

No, you have inferred that, I did not imply it.

Re: How good are Ethernet Powerline Adaptors?

You were inferring that Powerline adapters would could not be used to connect wireless devices which is misleading.

You are now coming across as trying to dig your self out of a hole so you may now be best to stop digging.

No, you were inferring - incorrectly as it happens. I think that you meant “implying”.

Re: How good are Ethernet Powerline Adaptors?

redkite, that is correct.

If one of the existing Ethernet cables on the upstairs floor is close to the vertical position of the new router below you could also

place the new router high on a shelf

Get a WiFi to Lan adapter and plug in the upstairs Ethernet cable

Replace the old router with a switch and plug the existing cables in.

Cost less than £50

Plug n play
