Landline setup

Wondering if i can get some help please?

So i bought some telephones and i forgot that my router (TP-Link) doesnt have a telephone socket. So i have bought a Smart hub 2. What id like to know would this setup work? Bascially i have the ONT in a narrow hall way and the TP Link router on the wall near the ONT, no room for the Smart Hub so want to put that in the Front room near the TV where a ethernet is already ran though the wall for the TV. Would this work?

ONT --> Tp Link Router --> BT Smart Hub (Bridge or extender mode Possible?) --> Telephone

Or would it need to be?

ONT --> BT Smart Hub --> Tp Link Router

                           To

                      Telephone

Re: Landline setup

I'm afraid the Smarthub 2 has to be the first in line after the ONT for the digital voice telephone to work.
Since you've had to buy a Smarthub 2, this presumably means that BT has not supplied one to you, which they normally do when they migrate you to DV.
So you may also need to amend your contract with BT for them to provide you with a DV service.

Re: Landline setup

Who supplies your broadband?

As ChrisJP says, if you don't already have one, BT usually supply you with a Smart Hub 2 (SH2) when they move you to Digital Voice (DV).

The SH2 will only work with BT's DV, as it is not standard VoIP but a proprietary version of.  The SH2 will not work for another supplier's phone system.

If it does, then the second layout is what you need but even this is not straightforward as the TP-Link will have to be in a separate subnet.  If you search for it, there are many posts on this forum about how to do that.
