Netgear R6220 instead of BT Hub2

Hi!

I've got an old Netgear R6220 that I got from a friend. I'm planning to replace the BT Hub2 with it as BT decided that I can't change my DNS to anything except what they want.

Netgear has a WAN port for RJ45 when BT Hub has the RJ11 to connect. Will the RJ-45 to RJ-11 cable work with this or will I need to get some other router/modem?

Anybody tried that before?

What service do you have? That is just a router. The rj11 port on the hub is a DSL port not a wan port.

Unless you have fttp, the Netgear will need a separate modem

I do have a Fibre Essential package, I just have a double socket in the wall where it connects and that goes from the main box on the street, so I assume it's not FTTP then.

No, and the Netgear won't work unfortunately.

In that case, if I want to buy a replacement, what should I look for? Any modem / router combo will work, or does it needs to be VDSL specifically?

While I'm a big fan of Asus routers, the router/modems I've seen have been nothing but trouble, so I'd probably not look at Asus for that!
I'm sure @licquorice will correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are of a certain mindset, you should be able to set up a Raspberry Pi (or similar) with Pi-Hole working as a DHCP & DNS replacement.  All while still using the BT router as the gateway!

I did set up most of my devices manually, but stuff like TV has no access to change DNS. Same with BT Hub. It used to be an option apparently, but they... well... patched it up. Additionally, when I have friends over, I'd like them to be protected as well.
