Network Adapters - Realistically How Fast?

Hi, I've just signed up to a faster broadband from BT.  My guaranteed speed is 700.  Connecting wirelessly near the BT Smart Hub 2, I'm getting about 350 to 400 (still some short of my guarantee of 700).  In my upstairs room connected with new TP-link power line extender, I'm only getting about 150.

Just wondering realistically if this is likely to be as fast as I can get or should I pursue with BT for a better speed?

The speed guarantee is the speed your hub will receive and does not cover the speed you receive from the Hub to devices in your home.

For best speeds you need to have a wired ethernet connection from your devices to the hub.

WiFi speeds vary due to interference and the higher frequencies can't travel that far.

Power line adaptors will get interference from your internal electrical wiring which can reduce speeds. There are also different protocols these can use, some are better than others but again interference can cause issues

The speed guarantee is the speed to the hub not to devices.

The wireless speed is not guarnteed. 300/400mbps is pretty good.

Powerline adapters are only as good as the electric circuit and will never obtain the claimed speeds by the manufacturer.

If you want to check your speed to the hub you will need to use the BT speed tester.

Thanks for the replies.  I have used the BT speed tester so the speed getting to the Hub is close to the guaranteed speed.  I was wondering how much I would lose realistically via the wiring to upstairs. 

On my previous broadband deal, I was getting close to the guarantee of 70 through my network Adapters so had hoped I would get a lot close to 700 under the new deal.

You will only get as fast your electric cables can support. There is no guarantee as to what that will be as each property is different.

Your asking the wrong question. 

You should be asking why BT sell 900mbps given that they only supply a wifi 5 router that was launched in 2019.

 On a EE 900mbps package you get a wifi 6 router..with the option of wifi 7 router

Well I’ve got a pair of BT Mini Connectors that have got two 1Ge Ethernet ports on them. Looking on the web there’s people that have done a few tests on them and from one room to another shows around 170Mbps. I’ve used them to connect to my garden shed and on a 150Mbps fibre 100 service I get around 120 Mbps, perhaps more, on a 45m run of supply cable feeding the shed. Far more than I actually need so they do the job and saves messing about with external cat5 cable.
