New PC - poor broadband speed

I have Halo 3 and was getting download speeds of around 45Mbps using the WiFi in my house, below the advertised level but above the guaranteed minimum.

I've just replaced my PC with one from the same supplier, positioned in exactly the same place and without changing anything else in the house, and am now only getting between 12-20 Mbps with occasional higher readings up towards 30, but not lasting very long.  Like the old one, the new PC has an internal WiFi card and I've attached the projecting plastic aerial supplied to the back of the box (the only difference being the new card is WiFi7 whereas before I had WiFi6).  The connection is at 2.4GHz; I know 5GHz would be faster, but my PC is some distance from the router (i.e. upstairs).

I've tried several online speed testers, and they're all returning the same results - although when I use the Broadband Testing facility on the MyBT site itself, it comes back reporting there's no problem.  Nevertheless I can see from the way my PC is performing that my connection is very slow.

Any ideas?

Re: New PC - poor broadband speed

Halo is a benefits package and has no bearing on your broadband speed , WiFi speed isn’t ’guaranteed’ by anyone , as there are too many variables outside of your provider control to make any such guarantee , and TBH , you have proven this yourself by using a different router (and therefore WiFi device ) and getting a different speed to the previous router .

The best solution is to use a wired devices , so an Ethernet cable between the router and the PC , although this may not be simple or practical…you could look at power-line type extenders or a WiFi extender system (BT have a whole home WiFi type offering)   if you have Halo 3+ this is a part of your Halo benefit so you could call and get extra WiFi extenders , but not if you have Halo 3, which presumably is what you do have as you don’t mention the initial WiFi extender that’s is supplied when you take Halo3+.

Re: New PC - poor broadband speed

No ISP guarantees WiFi speed, it would be ridiculous to do so. Your guaranteed speed is connection speed at the ONT/ router.

If you want a reliable connection over distance, Ethernet is the way to go.
