Port forwarding

Go to solution

Hi I’m new to this, I had problems with my smart hub 2 and technical said they were going to restart it and optimise my settings as I wasn’t getting complete Wi-Fi about the house and is sending a home tech person to get my signal in rooms improved.
My son is away and Tech person said they have lost port forwarding settings as they didn’t realise I had port fowarding for my security cameras.  I thought they were  just restarting the hub would not delete these settings but my Son says they must of reset rather than restart.  The Tech person at Bt refuses to help me.

I’m not very technical but have found out from my son the following

set on port 8000

Camera           Ip address           Port     Description

1.                    192.168.1.11   8001. Front left

2.                    192.168.1.13   8002. Front right

3.                     192.168.1.12   8003 Rear left

4.                      192.168.1.10  8004 Rear right

So now I don’t know what to do. Mysonsaid they had to be static in addresses.

Any help would be gratfully accepted.

Re: Port forwarding

So, most security cameras don't have to be set up this way, and I'd be concerned that the obvious reason for setting up cameras in this fashion could actually compromise your network!

We'd need more info on the equipment brands what your setup is, how you are accessing the cameras, info on software etc.  Frankly, if this were Dragons Den I'd be out right now.

If you do want to try giving us more info I'd start on what you are trying to do rather than how you are trying to do it, and I'd maybe look at support groups for the cameras.  Most (not all) security camera systems are pretty simple to set up and keep secure just so long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions like a true pedant!

Hi the Hikvision bullet ip cameras are going to a net gear switch which is hard wired from loft to downstairs Nas qnap drive which has surveillance Station installed and out of the Nas to black Bt disk with Ethernet cable.

Re: Port forwarding

I can't say for sure, but I see no reason to be setting up the cameras in this fashion, or the need to poke these holes through your firewall - this is probably why support was reluctant to talk you through port forwarding.

*I am very much willing to be wrong on this but:

Surveillance station does not need the cameras to have static IPs, and once set up you can use the Surveillance station app to view the camera feeds without poking those holes in your firewall!  What you seem to be describing is unnecessarily complex, and less secure!

I believe the reason my son was saying forwarding to ports and fixed Ip addresses was so the cameras can be viewed through an app remotely

App is ivms4500

Much safer to use the VPN server on the qnap to login to your home network then view the cameras as of you are at home.

Re: Port forwarding

@Derekmurton  a few things.

First of all the cameras will need to have been configured with those addresses on the cameras themselves as the addresses are outside the DHCP range of the hub.

I would have thought you only need to access the NAS rather than the individual cameras.

As BT residential uses dynamic public IP addresses, you will also need to register with a dynamic DNS service such as NoIP or DynDNS.

Post back if you still want instructions how to forward the ports to your cameras.

Re: Port forwarding

Hi all sorted now my son did it, bt had reset hub and lost all settings dns and port forwarding.

backed up settings on hub so hopefully if happens again can restore

whats the difference in hub restart and reset t thought restart was just switching off and switching back on

i had to switch off all disks and unplug Wi-Fi items restart the hub then 1st disk and switch on pc to link then switch on 2nd disk then and switch back on all Wi-Fi items then they linked to disk 2

Other wise I found not switching off Wi-Fi items like tv sonos they would all link to hub and not have a great signal

Bt quite honestly we’re a waste of time.

thanks for help though
