Powerline Ethernet Compatibility

Hi

I have just been upgraded to Full Fibre, so I renewed my out of date contract to Fibre 900 Halo3+ (probably a bit overkill tbh).

I work from home mainly, and up until now I have used a couple of TP-Link Powerline Ethernet adapters to connect my laptop, and the old router.

Now I have the BT Hub-2, the EE Backup Box, and an EE 'disc' (its a box)

I setup the powerline adapters as they were before, but all I get is 91Mb/s / 93Mb/s

On Wifi I am getting 147Mb/s / 106MB/s !

What am I doing wrong?, or shall I just live with WiFi?

My adapters are

TP-Link Powerline TL-PA717 (ethernet)

TP-Link Powerline TL-WPA-7617 (ethernet, wifi extender)

I have seen conflicting information regarding 1Gb/s compatibility.

I think I am using the correct cabling.

Re: Powerline Ethernet Compatibility

The PA717 is a Gb capable device. Make sure you are using a fully wired Cat 5e or above Ethernet cable, a Cat5 cable will be restricted to 100Mb.

Re: Powerline Ethernet Compatibility

According to TP-Link, both units have gigabit ethernet. So the possibilities are:

  • Your mains wiring can't support anything faster. Try placing the units next to each other in a twin socket & test again. Never use extension leads.
  • One or more of your ethernet cables isn't at least Cat5e. The standard is often printed on the sleeve of the cable. If there are no marks then replace, as they're dirt cheap.
  • That's all the devices can provide, despite the gigabit naming. Powerline device "up to" claims are pure fantasy. Maybe Google for some reviews to see if they include real world numbers. But as per the first point, not all mains wiring is equal anyway.

Re: Powerline Ethernet Compatibility

Thanks ...... I'll try the above ....... and I realise that Powerline speeds can be a little optimistic.

Re: Powerline Ethernet Compatibility

Yup powerline speeds can be optimistic, but make sure you've read through the documentation too.  Powerline adapters REALLY don't like being used on extension cables, and they also dislike traversing ring mains through the fuse box.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!
