Many thanks for your reply - it is much appreciated.
We are not currently connected to our nearest telephone pole so this sounded quite hopeful.
I think the problem maybe our PC which is not wireless and needs to be plugged into the router with an ethernet cable.
This may be why we ended up with so much cable running from the front to the back of the property.
