Sh2 with fibre 900

Hi All,

just wanted to share my recent upgrade to BT fibre 900. Will try and keep it short.

I have SH2 with 3 disks. I upgraded to FFTP 900. Wi-Fi speeds up to 150 mbps. Tech team came out and changed SH2 mode promising 600mbps Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi remained at 100-150 around the home.
it became obvious that SH2 and fibre 900 where not in the same technical space and SH2 limits your Wi-Fi I took a took a punt and purchased google Wi-Fi pro.  3 mesh points.
now have 600-700 around the home.
conclusion- you need your own hardware with FFTP. Bin the BT kit

Re: Sh2 with fibre 900

I can certainly understand the sentiments but don’t bin the BT kit…they’ll expect you to return it at some point and they’ll charge for it if you‘ve “lost” it.  Secondly, you’ll need the SH2 for digital voice at some point.  Perhaps stick it in a cupboard until you need it.

Re: Sh2 with fibre 900

While I don't use the SH2, at install the engineer managed to get a 700Mbps connection via his phone.  Other tests I've performed with the SH2 show it's pretty capable (though not using it daily means I can be wrong about some of this stuff).  The issue when WiFi speeds are slower than people expect is often the device they are using isn't as capable as the router, i suspect this is the situation here.  I'd suggest that for many of us the best WiFi devices we have are our phones, so maybe trying a speedtest via your phone would be a good idea.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Agreed, I have boxed the slow kit. Please don’t literally bin. By binned I mean keep to one side to be clear. 👍 but BT need to supply hardware that can now deal with the incoming speeds. I believe eE are on it . Digital voice nothing but a holding pattern for BT/EE to keep you waiting. I have digital voice on my mobile 👍

Re: Sh2 with fibre 900

Good to know that you have managed good speeds. Working from home and many painful hours of hard wiring disks and backhauls my SH2 has failed me. Nest pro solved all issues( at my cost !) within 2 hrs of set up.

Re: Sh2 with fibre 900

To be clear.

don’t expect 900mbps Wi-Fi. That won’t happen. Expectations should be reasonably set at 600mbps for a full fibre 900 plan. 900 is the incoming signal to your home. Wi-Fi won’t replicate that. Decent kit will give you 600-700 Wi-Fi if you have good  mesh around home.
I had ( now safely boxed for return) bt Smart Hub 2 and mesh (3 disks) which after visits and phone calls gave me Wi-Fi speed of  max 100-150mbps.

I bought google nest pro and replaced all ( direct to fibre box ont)

I now have 600-700 mbps around home.
