Tp Link Deco E4 setup

Hi all, how do I find out which type of Internet connection I have?

I'm trying to setup a Deco E4 mesh, and the app is asking for this simple piece of info, and if I don't know it contact my ISP, the have directed me here 🤷.

Screen shot of question and options below, what I do know is I'm fibre to cabinet, then good old copper wire to property.

I can't see anything on the hub which I can recognise as the answer.

Info very much appreciated.

@Ohgivemeabreak

As you will be using it connected to your BT Home hub, the preferred method is to configure it as an access point, but you cannot do that until its configured as a router, you then can change the mode to access point.

I use the Deco E4 here, in access point mode, and its superb.

Thank you.

Can I ask what that even means please?

I'm curious now.

Thanks again.

Re: Tp Link Deco E4 setup

Access point means it replaces the wireless signal from the home hub, and creates its own wireless mesh. You then turn off wireless on the home hub.

You lose some functionality like parental controls.

Re: Tp Link Deco E4 setup

Sounds great but how do I do all that?

I'm following the installation app and needed the Internet connection type to continue on.

Is this what you mean by configure as a router, and once that's done I'll have other options?

Re: Tp Link Deco E4 setup

You have to start in router mode, and it creates a totally separate IP subnet which can present issues if you use it for gaming.

To switch to access mode see https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1842/

Does not seem to like pppoe.

Go through setup only to get unable to connect to Internet?

I didn't think setting this up was going to be so damn difficult.

Re: Tp Link Deco E4 setup

pppoe is only use if you are connecting to a modem.

I do not remember any specific issues during initial setup, I thought there was a auto detect option. All it needs to do is to get a connection to the Internet.

Re: Tp Link Deco E4 setup

Have you entered the PPPoE username and password of bthomehub@btbroadband.com and BT ?
