This is a follow up to a thread i started a few months ago. To recap i get 800mb full fibre to my ONT box but all my wi-fi devices are only getting around 350. I wrote to computeractive magazine issue 714 and asked them if they could recommend a way to get higher speeds to my devices and they have said the asus rt axe7800 would be faster than my smart hub 2. I have looked at a few videos and i am not sure how i would go about using it.
The videos show the red ethernet cable plugged into 1 of the WAN/LAN ports , 1 thing i noticed is i cant see a socket on them to plug a phone into it.
It looks very complicated to set up as it does not seem to be a plug in and use like my smart hub 2.
If you have BTDV (Digital Voice phone service ) , then you need the SH2 connected to use it .The router you are interested in , even if it had a phone port will not provide you with BTDV
If you ‘only’ get 350Mb from whatever wireless device (WiFi) you measured that on , what is it you cannot do that getting nearer to the 900Mb available at the ONT would allow you to do on that device ?,
If you did improve your WiFi capability with a ‘better’ router so that you could measure faster speeds than 350Mb , it’s only that speed test that would demonstrate this faster speed , in day to day use whatever WiFi device you have , jumping from 350 Mb to 600Mb will be imperceptible so what is it you need better WiFi speeds to do ?
I can do whatever i want on the speed i am getting i was just wondering if their was a way of going about the 350mb i am getting to my devices or if their would be any benefit in doing it. I guess the only benefit would be when downloading large game files.
thanks for your replies and by the way i am on BTDV
Using BT's Digital Voice does complicate things but is quite possible and quite effective with the SH2 & a 3rd party router.
I did it with an Asus RT-AX5400.
One thing to note is that AX routers are wifi 6 (or above) but that's only an advantage when the receiving devices are a similar spec and really only working on the 5GHz band which has less range than the 2.4GHz band.
Just a quick note on downloading large files. Even with WiFi that can utilise the full speed of the broadband connection, it's not uncommon to be throttled by the servers you're connecting to. I don't have DV, have the 900/100 service (roughly), and an Asus GT-AX6000, but the only time you'll ever see the connection maxed out on a single device is when performing a speed test!
