Identifying Copper lines - Corporate Environment

Posting here because there doesn't seem to be anywhere else to go.

Am a sysadmin for an organisation with MANY sites, many that aren't well documented. May have alarm lines, door access controls, etc

Started identifying lines when they were in the thousands but still struggling with the last 300 or so.

Is there anyway to identify a phone/broadband line and get it to 'make a noise' or react in some way so we can identify what they are connected to?

Where are you working from, and what kit do you have access to? What are you looking for, cable routes or just identifying the line number on the sockets?

As long as it’s not number witheld, you should be able to plug in a phone and dial 17070 and it reads back the line number.

Alternatively, look up a suitably skilled network or Ex BT/ Openreach engineer to trace the numbers through your buildings. If you are lucky there may be numbers inside the DP and NTTP point lids, or written on the sockets themselves.

We are the other way around - we have all the numbers from OneBill and sometimes some vague direction from the lists BT can give us but we may have 6 lines into a building and no idea what they are for.

The only way I can think of is for an Openreach Engineer to identify the line at either the MDF, PCP and or DP and put an Oscillating Tone on and then using an Amp locate it.

Of course this could be extremely time consuming for you and the Openreach Engineer and could result in a rather large Call Out Fee.
