Link email to BT identity?

Go to solution

I recently locked myself out of my email account and a superb agent on the telephone helpline (Scott) got me back in.  He did this by linking my email to my BT identity so that I now use the same password for both.  I'm not sure of the meaning of this and the advantages it has, but he assured me that it was the best route.  I have two sub-accounts which are still independent of this and have their own passwords - shall I leave those as they are?

It is recommended that you have a different password for all accounts what ever they are so that if one is hacked the hacker won't be able to use the hacked password to get into other accounts.

Millions of people ignore this advice and use the same password on many accounts without any issues or being hacked.

The choice is yours whether to change the email password or not as only you will be able to decide what you would be happy with.

If however the BT agent now knows the password I would change them both either to be different or the same for both.

Is it normal to have the same password for the main email and MyBT accounts?  If a BT agent has done this, they must know what they're doing!

Why ask the question if you think the agent is correct!

Because BT are happy for you to do that does not make it right.

Edit: Do an Internet search on "is it safe to use same password for multiple accounts" and decide your self who has given you the best advice.

Hi @Frogmodem

Thanks for coming to the BT Community.

Our How to create strong passwords and keep them secure help page has tips for using strong passwords and information on password security.

Thanks.

Leanne.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I do use strong passwords and always have.  My original question is still valid though - why would a BT agent arrange for my BTID password to be the same as my email one?  He reckoned that there was a conflict between using openworld and internet addresses for the same account; I had always assumed that it didn't matter.  Anyway, no harm done as I can access all my accounts now.

The short answer is that the BT agent does not know what he is talking about when he arranged your BT password and your BTID password for your MyBT to be the same. Yes it will work and you can use it if you want but as I have posted, it is not good practice.

Did he explain why it suddenly had to be the same  when you had previously been using it for years without an issue.

As long as you are now happy with what he did and hopefully there will be "no harm done"  especially if the BT agent now knows the password to both of those accounts.
