Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

One of the email addresses on my account keeps being asked for a passcode when logging into webmail. It is not happening on the other email addresses and I've not had any notifications of a change of procedure with this.

Anyone else having this and any idea where the settings are for this, as the passcode is coming to me rather than them?

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

BT updated their email system with two factor authentication about a month ago.

The reason you are getting the code is because when you gave the email account to the people you would appear not to have followed the "gifted" procedure as per the following link

This means you are still the manager/owner of these accounts and as such you get the PIN for them.

You need to "gift"  the accounts to them and they set up their own BTID and manage the accounts and during that set up add their details and where the PIN is sent.

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

@gg30340 Ok, thanks for clarifying. I don't think the gifting option existed when the addresses were set up 20 years ago. However, shouldn't all of the email addresses be having this issue rather than just one?

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

Yes I would have thought that all the email accounts would have the 2FA activated however BT would appear to have created problems with this "update" and it may be that they have not all been activated.

If you log on to your MyBT which also has 2FA activated in the update, then go to "Your Products" the "Email, manage" this should show all your email accounts and their status for the management of the accounts. If you have not "gifted them they should all show in the "Active Email Addresses" section.

If they are "gifted" they will show in the section "Email Addresses you have given etc".

If they are all still in the first section, assuming you are the BT Broadband account holder under which all the email addresses were created, it should be your mobile number that gets notified however I have just checked with some of the email accounts that I have created and only the main account one which I also use formy BTID gets the 2FA request.

If you go into your MyBT "Your Profile" it should have the phone number that you want the 2FA to be sent to in the "Contact Details" section. You should be able to change it there if it is not correct.

Having said all of the above, the whole BT 2FA is a complete mess and while I used to have a fairly good grasp of how it worked due to the recent update I am now in the same position as the BT Team who introduced the update... that is clueless about how it now works!

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

@gg30340 All of the emails are in the first section. However, only some are able to be gifted, which is odd.

Is it possible to turn off 2FA for now whilst I get to the bottom of this? I can't seem to find a setting to do this.

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

You can no longer turn 2FA off since the update and since then anybody that did not have it turned on now have had the 2FA activated by BT.

It is being pushed out as a security measure, which I agree with but only if it works in the correct manner and either allows devices to be marked as "safe/known" by the user or it automatically recognises the device after a certain amount of time and usage which is what BT have said will happen.

I have found that neither of these happen and the 2FA remains working and I require a PIN.

As I said I think 2FA is the correct thing to have as an additional security measure so I do not object to it.

I use email clients and email apps to access my BTMail email accounts and the BT 2FA  does not work with them and does not require a PIN and the device is protected by other measures so it is not an issue to me.

As regards your email accounts that are not able to be gifted  you will need to contact the BTMail email team on 0330.1234.150 to see if they can sort out the mess they have created.

Re: Passcode When Logging Into Webmail

As gg30340 says, just use an email client such as Thunderbird to access your email.
You provide your password just once when setting up each email account and from then on you can access your email without having to bother with sign-ins and passwords - and certainly not 2FA!
