Mandatory upgrade to Fibre

Go to solution

Hi,

I've just received a letter from BT telling me they need to upgrade me to 'Digital Voice'.  I have two questions please as the BT call centre didn't see to ne able to explain it to me.

(1) I understand from the literature that this means I need to plug my phone into the BT router.  However the letter says that BT are going to upgrade me to BT Full Fibre free of charge.  Do I have to upgrade to Full Fibre - why can't I just plug my phone in the router I have ?

Also, if I did chose to upgrade to fibre, can I elect the location on the BT inlet and wall unit or does this have to go where my existing BT socket is ?

Thanks.

Re: Mandatory upgrade to Fibre

The migration to DV is effectively mandatory, the exchange equipment is being switched off by January 2027 , the change to FTTP for the time being isn’t  mandatory , if you don’t want to move to FTTP , you can decline the Openreach appointment ( it says this on the communication  )
Anyone who agrees to the FTTP upgrade, dis , within reason get to chose where the ONT is fitted , thus may be where the existing copper pair master socket is (if that’s what the customer wants ) or somewhere different, provided that new location is practical and practicable , asking (for example) for the ONT to be at the rear of a terraced house when the existing dropwire and master socket are at the front may be refused, but in general you can have the ONT in a different location to the master socket if that’s what you want ….the main criteria is it needs to be near an existing power outlet (two of you want your router near the ONT ) , if you want to use an extension power  lead that’s up to you it is acceptable
