is the email received today titled KEEPING YOUR BT EMAIL ACCOUNT SECURE legitimate or scam?
Without knowing the full context of the email it is difficult to say but it is most likely a scam although BT were sending out emails about the settings if you use an email client. It is that take a note of it and check your email client/app settings if you do use one.
If in doubt just treat it as spam and in any event do not click on any links or reply to it.

As @gg30340 has mentioned here, it's always best to err on the side of caution if you're unsure of an email, and not click any links or share any details.
There are a few things I would like to check though:
Peter
Thanks for your input Peter. It all looks legit but I am hyper vigilant! The sender is [email protected]
It's telling me that if I use the email via bt.com I don't need to do anything but if I use Outlook or Apple mail on my phone I need to change some settings. Then I could click on a help link and to make sure my software is using TLS security there is a link to a set up guide. It says if we don't do this by December, third party software users wont be able to receive BT emails. There is also the offer of help on a link 0330 1234 150.
The thing is I didn't find any similar info on the BT help website. This message hasn't appeared on the other mobile phone using a BT email address and in the same boat. I don't know what TLS but feeling fairly sure that I do use a third party client but or even am a third party client! If you can make sense of it I would be grateful for any advise.
It sounds like it is from BT.
They are checking you are using the correct settings on your email client/app if you use one.

Thank you. Much appreciated
