FTTP 910\110 - NetgearR7000 300Mbps download limit

Go to solution

Hi All,

I've just had (an hour ago) FTTP 910\110 installed. I did a quick speedtest on the supplied router and got 930\50. After reading these forums I switched over to my trust Netgear R7000 to boost the upload speed. This did the trick, it's now 110Mbps. Unfortuantely the download speed has dropped down to 300Mbps.

I still have an active line to virgin and that ran fine at 400Mbps through this router so I know the bottleneck isn't with the R7000.

I set the R7000 to PPPoE and it appears to connect without any obvious errors other than the download speed. Is there some setting I've missed somewhere that's limiting the download speed?

@stevil

how are you running the speed test, wired or wireless?

Wired, speedtest.net and also multiple newsgroup streams for testing.

It might be worth asking on a Netgear forum, there are no BT specific settings that would affect speed.

When you used the R7000 router with Virgin you must have been using the SuperHub in modem mode?  So the R7000 didn't have the overhead of PPPoE - if you have any QoS or parental controls enabled then that may slow down the download speed as the cpu in the R7000 is quite old now.  You can try a factory reset and make sure you don't have any features enabled though to get full download speed you will need to buy a newer router.

Thanks for the reply. I did check the CPU load, and as you say, it's much higher than it used to be, but still never really goingg over 50%. I don't run any QoS on it or parental controls as yet. I've actually got 2 R7000 so I might try the other one and see if it's any different.

The R7000 has a dual core cpu so when one core is running at 100% processing PPPoE it will show 50% overall usage.

I did consider the single threaded scenario but was hoping that wasn't the case. I really don't want to have to shell out for yet another router. I already have 4 but none of them are up to the task it seems! I'd give the BT router a try but it's seems to be capped at 50Mbps (I've been reading the other super-long thread about this issue). I've also got so much configured on the AdvancedTomato firmware I really can't be bothered starting again with a new modem............hmmmmmmmm.

Just to round this off, I overclocked the CPU on the R7000 last night and the download speed did increase as a result to about 400Mbps. So, it obviously is CPU restricted. I'll look into setting up pfsense or splash out on yet another router I think.

Thanks for your help.

Interesting, did you get your speed increase with the new router?

I ask as I have just upgraded to the Fiber 900 and with the BT SuperHub2 (really??) I get dl of 869 average after a few speed tests, but when swapped to my Netgear Orbi RK50 direct into the FTTP modem the fastest I can get is 450 with a  flat line like its being throttled. Have tried reset, firmware reflash... still sat solid at 450mbps. Swapped back to BT SuperHub2 and now back to 894mbps, with a wavy line like its best effort.

Just wondering if anybody has got the Fiber900 running with non supplied BT Router?
