Fibre Cable is waaaay too long!

Our Full Fibre 900 product was installed when the house was a stripped back to brick building site. The very accommodating Openreach installer left lots of slack as the layout in the house wasn't quite set in stone at the time.

Long story short, we are about to move back in, the BT installation is extremely tidy but the end of the fibre cable protrudes about 6m too long out of a faceplate 🙂

Should I 

(a) Call BT to remediate

(b) Try to fix myself ( Think the last cable I made was for an RS-232 connection 20 years ago)

(c) See if an an electrician is on site next week for some other work  can tidy it up

Or any other suggestions.

Optical cables are nothing like electrical cables, you need someone trained in fibre optics if you want to shorten it, do not try it yourself or trust anyone who doesn't have the appropriate training

There is no way you can shorten the optical cable without specialist splicing equipment. Don't even think about trying it yourself or employing somebody privately to do it.

You will need to ask Openreach (at cost) to do it.

Thanks very much for the replies, the advice seems pretty clear that this is not something to be casually tinkered with. 

I suspect the the answer is "no" but is there any potential for me to suffer performance issues due to the coiled mass of fibre cable leading up to the openreach modem. It could even be longer than the 6 meters previously stated. I may try and get it dragged back into faceplate so it all sits beneath the floorboards.

The length and being coiled will have no effect on performance.

Just don't put any kinks in it. Sharp bends or kinks will affect performance.

Looking at your picture the biggest threats are likely to be trip and fall hazard and damage by being trampled on or other stuff dropped on top of it. 

I agree that it needs tidying up but it's well beyond the scope of the DIY'er

Ha ha yes. Its perhaps not as bad as it looks, the property is currently unfurnished and we are just about to move in. Im thinking

(a) judiciously hide it all behind an extra large tv unit
(b) try and wind back through the face-plate into the area under the floorboards
(c) engage openreach to shorten the cable
(d) abandon the connection altogether and have the fibre presented directly into the external wall of the utility room as I originally intended but was unable to for various reasons the day the engineer attended

The only way to shorten it would be to cut off the SC Connector, which would mean installing a secondary Splice Point inside your house.

You should’ve pulled out the slack back towards the external CSP during renovations so it could’ve been cut back and respliced there.

How about building a facade about 12" or so in front of the wall from (say) plywood and leaving the fibre loose behind it?
