How do BT Authenticate you on BT Routers?

Hello,

Just a question that came to me today that I am curious as to whether anyone has an answer to.

Broadband is an 'Always On' product, whether ADSL, VDSL(2) or FTTP delivery. The 'internet' is ready and waiting at your router. Now, let's say you haven't paid your bill. An ISP traditionally authenticates your username and password within the router, and if they want to cut you off, they would stop your account details from authenticating.

However, BT Home Hubs/Smart Hubs always use a generic username/password combo which is the same for everyone, so, out of curiosity, what identifying factor are they able to block (and where do they block this) to stop your access to the broadband.

I am not in this position, just hypothesising… curious minds want to know.

It authenticates against the line itself.
