Leaving email messages on server

Go to solution

I've had an email account elsewhere until recently, and always left messages on the server for 30 days after downloading to outlook.  This was a real sanity-saver when my computer crashed a year ago.

Now I've set up a BT account, and can't see that option anywhere.  When I wanted to access an email via webmail from a different computer earlier today, I found all virtually all my emails had disappeared.  As the email I was looking for included the link to a meeting I was trying to sign in to, this was a problem.

How can I set up the system to have the emails remain on the server again?

Its a setting within your mail client (Outlook), nothing to do with BT.

If you have created the account as IMAP rather than POP3, webmail will always be in sync with Outlook. If you have created it as POP3, you need to tick the box to leave a copy of the message on the server in advanced settings.

Thank you.  Outlook did the set-up automatically when I put in the btinternet address, and it looks like it is IMAP.  I can't see the option you show anywhere.

Does that mean I have to set it up again, but manually, to make it POP3 to have this option?

No, if it set up as IMAP everything should be in sync. Mail will be permanently on the server and all devices should show exactly the same. Are you sure you haven't got another device that is set up as POP3 without the box being ticked that is downloading the mail and deleting it from the server?

Thank you again for your help.

I am mystified.  This morning and at lunchtime, I could see only three messages in my inbox on-line, and half a dozen sent messages.  Suddenly, I can see all of the messages in the inbox, and all of the sent messages.  Perhaps there was a glitch in the system earlier.
