News about steep increase in BT's subscription charges.

BT is heavily advertising its new "BT backed up by EE" product. In the past BT has been guilty of advertising new and/or improved products as being "For new customers only" so I googled to see if this was another one. One of the results of my search was an article on Money Saving Expert's website:

"Almost all BT and EE broadband, landline, mobile and TV customers who sign up to a new deal or renew their existing one will be hit with steep price hikes next year, after the companies made changes to their terms and conditions. Once you've agreed to a new deal, you're locked into the price rise – so it's important to factor it in before you sign up.

Update 8 October 2020: We initially wrote this story about BT and EE back in September, however Plusnet - which is part of the BT Group - is implementing similar changes. Price rises on Plusnet contracts taken out from 7 October 2020 will be calculated as CPI + 3.9%, and this rise will take effect on or after 1 June 2021, and then on or after 1 March every year from March 2022.

EE is now part of the BT Group, which is why this change in policy affects both BT and EE customers. Those who renew or sign up to a new contract from 1 September 2020 onwards will see their monthly bills jump in March by significantly more than the rate of inflation.

Is anyone else aware of this huge increase? Why is BT so confident that its customers will accept this?

Talk about old news, this was discussed last year. Seems to me people are accepting it & other companies are moving to the same method to. I'm sure if people are unhappy with it they'll move

You will find that many , if not all large scale Telcos have amended their T&C’s for new customers and re contracting existing customers , saying that a yearly increase based on CPI or RPI , plus *% is inbuilt, the increase price is no longer a reason to be excused from early termination charges, if the customer  is still within the contractual minimum term.

As already pointed out this was widely discussed months ago ,  and anyone coming to join or renew had the choice to not join or renew, if you haven’t joined or renewed since the implementation date, then it doesn’t affect you anyway, obviously if you are outside a minimum term you can still move to whoever you like without ETC , just the normal notice period required, and if you want to pay the ETC you ( obviously ) can move to whoever you like whenever you like, it’s simply the case that you cannot say , for example 6 months into a new 24 month deal , ‘right I’m off , because you have put your price up’ .

Some providers ( not BT ) were advertising, ‘no in term price increases , guaranteed,’, then reneged on those promises, with this there is no chance of misunderstanding.

You may still find some providers that still supposedly  ‘guarantee’ no increases within your minimum term, or haven’t changed their T&C’s so any increase allows you to leave penalty free, regardless of any minimum term.

It's already happened, first change was March 2020, It's not just BT that have this approach, Three UK, Vodafone and other ISP's have the same or very similar terms for annual price changes.

Does anyone know if BT is still allowing Plusnet, Sheffield, (one of their subsidiaries) to undercut them?

They run independently so could try and undercut them, the same as other competitors.
