Re: Replace home hub with new router or by a managed switch

Normally in the region of 50mbps download I think.

There is the fibre cabinet in the village... I'd done a bit of research on that as i was toying with replacing the hub with a HG612 and separate router... if that helps?

Yes, that is FTTC. So you need a VDSL modem router

Re: Replace home hub with new router or by a managed switch

HG612 seems to be something recommended on many a forum or equivalent draytec... I think I like the idea of a separate modem and router.

Am I barking up the right tree?

Entirely up to you if you prefer separate modem and router. The HG612 is getting a bit long in the tooth now but still widely used when separate devices are preferred.

Any alternatives I ought to be considering?

Not really for a standalone modem. The Draytek Vigor 130 and 166 seem to get mixed reports.

For a combined unit, have a look at the TP Link and Asus ranges.

I've got a HG612  en route, could you tell me if this would be a suitable router please...

You need to delete the link as it is against forum rules to link to e-commerce sites.

That would be a suitable router except it doesn't support Bt's implementation of IPv6 unless Netgear have updated their firmware to do so.

I moved to a modem (old ECI) and a DECO M5 mesh system (no router).  I was nervous about it but it has transformed my broadband experience.
